Left Alliance is a political party whose goal is transforming Finland, as well as the whole world, to become just, equal and ecologically sustainable.
We want equal rights, duties and opportunities for everyone, independently of their wealth, gender, faith, worldview, ethnic background, age, sexual orientation, health, ability or other similar attributes.
Sufficient income for all
All those living in Finland should be guaranteed a sufficient income and good conditions of employment, whether they are regular or part-time employees, entrepreneurs or self-employed. Left Alliance wishes to promote honest work and end the gray economy, which allows the rich avoid their social responsibility and circumvent the taxes and the laws.
Income must also be guaranteed for those outside working life, such as students, pensioners, those caring for their loved ones at home, the sick and the unemployed. For this purpose, we wish to implement a simple model of social security where all the citizens are paid a sufficient guaranteed minimum income. This would be recollected as taxes from those with large incomes, who do not require the basic income for living.
Sufficient services for everyone – a fairer model of taxation
Quality education, health care, services for the elderly and disabled, and the culture belong to all of those living in Finland. To offer its members security and services, the society needs taxable income.
A just level of taxation is bound to the level of income. Left Alliance supports a progressive method of taxation, where those with large incomes pay relatively more of their income in taxes than those with small incomes. The indirect taxes collected from everyone, such as the value-added tax added to the prices of goods and services, are less equal than progressive taxes.
Left Alliance supports a tax model that taxes all income equally. Currently, large dividends and other capital income are taxed less than similar wage or stock income. We also want trade of stock market to be taxed, as other businesses are.
National responsibility
Just as we aim to achieve a just society in Finland, we must also care for the Earth. The destruction of the environment and the overconsumption of the natural resources must end. Climate change threatens the people’s possibilities of living on various parts of the globe. The Left supports acting strongly to reduce the climate change emissions caused by humans activity.
We believe in regulating global trade to protect the nature and the people. Removing inequality and poverty from the world is possible, but depends on the political decisions.
Many decisions that affect Finland are made in the European Union. Thus, Finland must be an active part of the EU’s decision-making process. It is important to guarantee fair taxation, good working conditions and environmental protection regulations in all EU countries.
We aim to create Europe that accepts the cultural differences of the peoples. We work for peace and to to keep Finland outside of military alliances. The area of Finland must not be used for wartime operations against other countries.
Our vision for the future
The Left Alliance’s vision of the future and the state of the world has been described in the Red-Green Future document (in Finnish and English) [http://www.vasemmisto.fi/politiikka/ohjelmat/punavihrea-tulevaisuus/]
In the society of the future we wish to construct, wealth is shared in a just manner, everyone has a sufficient income, the way we live will not make it harder for the nature’s ability to maintain itself, everyone can utilize their abilities as equal members of the community, and all decisions on community services, working conditions and economy are taken openly and reviewed with with the people they affect.
